Laurent Hilaire: contract with Bavarian State Ballet extended to 2031

MUNICH "The future plan for the Bayerische Staatsoper is in place: We are focusing on personnel continuity and structural reforms. The successful triumvirate of the Bayerische Staatsoper continues to shine - State Artistic Director Serge Dorny and Ballet Director Laurent Hilaire will continue their work in Munich until 2031, Vladimir Jurowski will remain General Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper until 2028 at his own request. Under this management team, the Bayerische Staatsoper is rushing from success to success. "I am delighted that we are continuing our joint work and leading our cultural flagship well into the future", explained Arts Minister Markus Blume at a press conference at the Nationaltheater in Munich today.

Arts Minister Markus Blume continued: "Diverse, visionary and virtuoso: the Bayerische Staatsoper is one of the most renowned opera houses in the world. We are proud of that! From classical music theater at the highest level to the youth program, from open-air opera to the Stufenbar and much more - the Bayerische Staatsoper says yes to the opera experiment and this is rewarded by top capacity utilization and multiple awards. We also know that the challenges of running a modern music theater are different today than they were just a few years ago. That's why we want to put our goals, processes and structures to the test. To this end, we are bringing external experts on board. Our ambition: we want to go beyond the traditional boundaries of the opera world and achieve an even broader opening to urban society. There is already a lot on offer - and there is more to come: with the development of a streaming platform, everyone can bring the Bayerische Staatsoper into their living room. Offers like these are what make the opera of tomorrow!"

External consultation process and structural reforms for future successes

Arts Minister Blume and State Director Dorny have agreed to further professionalize the organizational structure. This will be achieved by initiating a consulting process conducted by external experts, which will develop concrete optimization measures for processes, communication and structures within the State Opera with the close involvement of the staff. The experience and findings from this consultation process will also be used as a model for other Munich state theaters.
Attention will also be paid to the renewal of the core repertoire. The commitment to the repertoire remains valid. Other common goals include opening up the State Opera to the city's society and attracting new audiences.

State Director Serge Dorny: "I would like to thank Minister of State Blume for the trust he has placed in me and for the many intensive discussions over the last few months. These discussions have shown that our vision for the future of the Bayerische Staatsoper is very close. I am therefore delighted to have been given the task of continuing and developing the artistic vision of recent years for a further five years beyond 2026. Together with Vladimir Jurowski as General Music Director, Laurent Hilaire as Ballet Director and the outstanding staff on and behind the stage, I look forward to making the Bayerische Staatsoper an opera house of the future: an opera house that simultaneously preserves its tradition and allows experiments such as the "Ja, Mai" festival; an opera house that continues to open up to society in order to remain socially relevant in the future."

General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski: "The Bayerisches Staatsorchester is not only one of the oldest, but undoubtedly one of the best orchestras in the world. I am delighted to be able to continue working with this unique collective in the orchestra pit and on the concert stage over the coming years. It is still important to preserve tradition, to make the present a topic of conversation and thus to set the course for an artistically vibrant future for the orchestra. However, as General Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper, one of the most successful opera houses in the world, I am also very pleased to continue to work closely with the other musical collectives of the house, the choir, the soloist ensemble, the musical department, the stage management and all other trades. Together, as in previous years, we will bring extraordinary and remarkable productions to the stage at the Nationaltheater and all other venues of the Bayerische Staatsoper."

Ballet director Laurent Hilaire: "I am very pleased about the trust placed in me and that I can continue on my path here in Munich together with the company, the house and our audience. The Bayerisches Staatsballett is an internationally renowned ensemble with outstanding dancers and an extremely varied program. My wish and my goal is to further enhance this reputation and to attract even more people to this wonderful art form."

The management team around Dorny, Jurowski and Hilaire has been working at the Bayerische Staatsoper since the 2021/2022 season. The contracts of State Artistic Director Serge Dorny and Ballet Director Laurent Hilaire have been extended for a further five years until 2031. An extension of two years until 2028 has been agreed with General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski at his own request, with the possibility of a further extension.
